Medjugorje For All (A BLOG about Medugorje)

Not so long ago on June 24, 1981 in the tiny village of Medjugorje, Bosnia-Hercegovina, Mary (mother of Jesus)appeared to several young people. She continues her appearances to this day and has come as a gift from God to us. When I first read about this phenomenon, I was both fascinated and doubtful at the same time. Since then I have researched everything I could find about Medjugorje and have been privileged to travel there as a pilgrim.

Name:
Location: Schenectady, New York, United States

Although I am a born again Protestant I have a great interest in what has been happening in Medjugorje. After several years of research on the apparitions, I am reaching out to others (people of all faiths and beliefs) who have the same interest. What appears on this blog are stories and articles, mostly borrowed and hopefully accurate, additional comments and thoughts from me about Medjugorje.

Wayne Weible's Books

I first read about Medjugorje about 5 years ago when I purchased a copy of Wayne Weible's first book on Medjugorje at a garage sale. I had never heard the word Medjugorje but I had heard of apparitions in Fatima and in Lourdes. Both of these apparitions happened a long time ago and were over a short period of time. To think that apparitions were happening today and had been going on for about 20 years was unbelievable. I wanted to believe that Heaven was coming to earth but I was very, very skeptical. Why wasn't this all over the news? If people claimed to see UFO's, wouldn't it be all over the news? For about 5 years I have investigated and researched everything in print and on the internet regarding Medjugorje. I was fully expecting to reach a roadblock and a point where the authenticity of the apparitions and the visionaries were suspect. Much to my surprise, that never happened. I can't explain why my great interest but I am so greatful to Heaven itself for letting me in on this awesome gift. Two pilgrimages later, I am more convinced that these apparitions are authentic. The fruits speak for themselves.

Medugorje Story

Medugorje Story from Sr. Emmanuel's website.

In the heart of Herzegovina, in the former Yugoslavia, there is a Croatian village of a thousand souls nestled between two hills, Krizevac and Podbrdo (the name “Medjugorje” means “between the mountains”).The people, all hard-working country folk making their living from the soil, barely managed to survive by growing tobacco and grapes. Until recently they lived in a state of political repression under the eagle eye of the omnipresent Communist militia. The parish church was in the hands of the fiery Franciscan priest, Fr. Jozo Zovko. On June 24, 1981, the Feast of St. John the Precursor, the village was thrown into turmoil by an extraordinary happening. A few teenagers were walking along the path by Podbrdo hill when they saw a shining silhouette of a lady holding a baby in her arms. The next day she returned and revealed her identity: “I am the Blessed Virgin Mary.” The group of 6 visionaries was then formed definitively and consisted of Marija Pavlovic, Vicka Ivankovic, Mirjana Dragicevic, Ivanka Ivankovic, Ivan Dragicevic, and Jakov Colo.Every day the Gospa (the Croatian word for Our Lady) reappeared, giving the children “messages” for themselves, for the parish, and for the world: messages of peace and the need for conversion and love in order to bring back to the Heart of God our poor humanity lost in darkness so far from the Lord! Since 1987 these messages have been given once a month. The Gospa also gives each visionary certain secrets which will be revealed through the intermediary of a priest chosen by the visionary, at a time the Gospa decides.Father Jozo quickly came to believe in the apparitions for he saw Our Lady himself one day in the church. The Bishop of Mostar, Monsignor Zanic, at first believed too, but later was convinced that the whole thing had been cooked up by the Franciscans. A rift then developed which exists today. In 1986 Monsignor Zanic provided Cardinal Ratzinger with a negative report on the apparitions, but the Cardinal removed Zanic from the case and gave the investigation over to a new Commission formed of Yugoslavian bishops with Monsignor Komarica (from Banja Luka) at its head. This Commission is open to further developments and has not concluded its investigations. In April 1991 this Commission officially accepted Medjugorje as a place of prayer, and authorized it as a place of worship. Private pilgrimages are authorized there. On August 21, 1996, Doctor Navarro Valls, the spokesman for the Holy See, made explicit the position of Rome: “You cannot say people cannot go there until it has been proven false. This has not been said, so anyone can go if they want” (CNS Publication, August 21, 1996). “When Catholic faithful go anywhere, they are entitled to spiritual care, so the Church does not forbid priests to accompany lay-organized trips to Medjugorje in Bosnia-Herzegovina,” he added.Since June 25, 1981, more than 20 million pilgrims have come to this little village to pray and experience conversion, making Medjugorje one of the most frequented sanctuaries in the entire world. For more information:http://medjugorje.org/medpage.htmhttp://www.medjugorje.hr/vodic%20kroz%20svetiste%20en.htm

More Info...

What is the Blessed Mother saying in her messages from Medjugorje and many other places of apparitions? She is calling all of us to conversion -not just an initial conversion. Conversion is an ongoing thing. Mary wants us to be converted; that word comes from the Latin meaning "to turn". To turn to whom? Mary is calling everyone to turn to Jesus, be with Jesus, walk with Jesus, pray trusting in Jesus. She is calling us to faith stronger than death. What is such faith?

Faith goes way beyond assent to the truth that God has revealed. It is holding on the Jesus. It is being with Jesus. It is accepting that love of Jesus and trying to respond to it however I can. That's faith. That's the faith to which Mary calls us.

Protestants & Apparitions

Understandably people of any Protestant faith would find the whole story of the apparitions in Medjugorje (or Medugorje) very difficult to believe. Many of these faiths strictly adhere to the Bible, which is the very Word of God. Mary, a mere mortal, appearing to human beings on earth 2000 years after she had lived on the earth would probably be dismissed as something that is not from God. In fact, since the Catholic Church has not approved (or disapproved) of these apparitions officially, many devout Catholics have never heard of the apparitions.

Here is a thought:
If, throughout the Old Testament, God sent prophets to communicate with humans, why couldn't He send the one that He chose to be His Son's earthly mother? Can't God do anything, after all, He is GOD. Mary says that she is sent by the Father to ask us to turn to Jesus for salvation. Mary has also said that one doesn't have to be Catholic to be saved.

Any other thoughts out there? AGREE or DISAGREE?

In The Beginning

THE STORY OF MEDJUGORJE IN A NUTSHELL

A small village in Bosnia-Hercegovinia (formerly Yugoslavia) first became famous on June 24, 1981. On that date, according to the testimonies of 6 children ( 5 teens and 1 boy of 10 years), Mary revealed herself on Podbrdo, a rocky hill in Medjugorje. What makes this apparition site unique in the long list of claimed apparitions from all over the world is that the apparitions have continued to the present time, almost 25 years.

At around 6 p.m. on that first day several of the teens saw a beautiful young woman with a crown, holding a baby in her arms up on the hill. She waved to them, inviting them to come closer. They were so frightened that they ran home. On the following day, June 25, 1981, the teens returned to the bottom of the hill at the same time as the previous day. Suddenly they saw 3 flashes of light and the same beautiful woman. They approached her this day and she prayed with them. On the third day, the children climbed up the hill, wishful, anxious and fearful. About 1000 people joined them as word had spread fast.

Mary has come with messages through all of these years, wishing to draw the whole world, Her children, to Her Son. The messages of Our Lady are of two kinds - general messages for everyone in the World and special messages for the parish that was "especially chosen to be lead by Her" and the pilgrims who visit it. Peace, Faith, Conversion, Praying and Fasting are five basic messages that are part of all of the others in a more or less direct way. 25 years of messages from heaven, just for us.
